I love love LOVE painting in my new studio. It's so wonderful to have space again! I was drawn to paint this little scene because there were such interesting colors as the blue sky was finally breaking through that stubborn marine layer.
Today I'm playing the "where can I possibly photograph my painting without a glare" game. It's my least favorite part of moving to a new place. I think I might have better luck on our patio later in the day. But this will have to do for the moment, it's much prettier in person. I gave the canvas a few extra coats of gesso before I started which gave the painting an interesting texture.
Sometimes I like to think of my little 6x6 paintings as oil sketches, they let me test out a composition without a huge commitment. And if I do a little sketch that I think turned out well then I would be a little foolish to not make something more out of it right? I'm a little torn on the subject.

Doesn't this tree look like something out of a Dr. Seuss book? I saw it by the beach one day and I just had to paint it. There were others around it too, they'll be making up tomorrow's painting.
I was walking by the campgrounds one morning and I couldn't believe how bright and beautiful the colors were! I usually like to exaggerate my colors, but this time I didn't even have to. I plan on doing a larger version of this tomorrow.
